Tall Fescue
LawnTurf-Type Tall Fescue, TTTF, Festuca arundinacea, K-31
Transitional zone workhorse (zones 4–8). More heat and drought tolerant than Kentucky Bluegrass; stays green longer into summer. Dormancy: may go semi-dormant in extreme heat (>35°C) or drought. Recovery: good — deeper root system than bluegrass. Overseeding window: fall (soil 50–65°F) or early spring. Mow at 3–4 in; taller in heat. Clump-forming (not rhizomatous) — must overseed bare patches. Brown patch is the primary disease threat in hot, humid summers: avoid evening watering, excess nitrogen in summer. Fertilize: fall-heavy program; avoid heavy nitrogen in summer heat.

How to establish and care for tall fescue

Sow in autumn
Sow in autumn when the soil is 10–18 °C, or in early spring. It handles heat and drought better than bluegrass thanks to its deeper roots.

Mow at 7–10 cm, a little taller in hot weather.

Overseed gaps
Tall fescue grows in clumps and doesn't spread, so overseed bare patches each autumn.

Avoid brown patch
In hot, humid summers brown patch disease is the main threat. Water in the morning, not the evening, and avoid heavy nitrogen in summer.
