Perennial Ryegrass

The dominant cool-season lawn grass in Northern Europe (UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Baltic states). Establishes fast — germinates in 5–7 days, usable lawn in 3–4 weeks. Ideal for overseeding bare patches and mixing with fescue blends. Active growth in cool, moist conditions (10–21°C); struggles in drought and heat above 27°C. Mow at 2.5–4 cm; tolerates close mowing better than most cool-season types. Fertilize: moderate, spring and early autumn. Avoid heavy feeding in summer. Red thread disease appears in wet, nitrogen-poor conditions — feed lightly in June if needed. Wear-tolerant but does not spread by stolons/rhizomes; must overseed bare areas. Most popular grass for UK and Irish lawns — look for improved tetraploid varieties for finer texture and better disease resistance.
