Group of fescue species sold as 'fine fescue' blends — extremely popular in Northern Europe and the UK. Very low maintenance: tolerates poor, sandy, acidic, and dry soils where other grasses struggle. Slower to establish than ryegrass (10–14 days germination) but extremely persistent once established. Mow at 3–6 cm; can be left as a low-cut ornamental or semi-wild area. Minimal fertiliser requirements — feeds 1–2x per year at most. Thrives in partial shade but handles full sun in cooler climates. Fusarium patch (pink snow mould) can be an issue in cool, wet autumns — avoid late-season nitrogen. Hard fescue and sheep fescue components make this ideal for slopes, verges, and low-input lawns. Common in UK, Scandinavia, Baltic states, Germany.
